NUTP appoints lawyer to assist teacher in student’s death over stolen phone case as inquest into Vasantha’s death will be held in Penang today
PETALING JAYA: The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has appointed a lawyer to assist the teacher allegedly involved in the death of M. Vasantha Piriya.
The teacher had allegedly accused and reprimanded Vasantha for stealing her handphone before sending the 14-year-old home.
“A lawyer has been appointed for a watching brief (on behalf of the teacher) during the inquest into the student’s death.
“We want to assist her and NUTP will represent the teacher if necessary,” NUTP secretary-general Harry Tan said in a statement Thursday.
It was reported in February that the student attempted suicide after the accusation.
The Form Two SMK Methodist Nibong Tebal student passed away after being in a coma for seven days at the Seberang Jaya Hospital.
An inquest into Vasantha’s death will be held in Penang on Friday (March 30).
